I'm only a private citizen of the United States, but I want to express my thanks on behalf of all Americans for the support and prayers of the German people. As you can imagine, right now, most of our news coverage is directly related to the tragedy which befell
all
of us on Tuesday, so we aren't getting much world news right now.
When I heard from a friend in Germany about all the things German people are doing to show their solidarity for the American people and compassion for the victims of this horrific act, I felt my spirit lift in a way that I can't really describe. We are not alone in the world! I know our two countries don't always agree on everything and that, as individual people, we may have differing viewpoints on many things. But if people who cherish freedom the way I know the German people and American people do, we may be able to come out of this a better world. I pray that will be so.
I know that you know what it's like. I know that you have experienced terrorist attacks on your own soil. You will remember that one of the hardest things is trying to explain to our children how anyone or any group could believe that it was right and good to destroy so many lives. Every time I try to explain to my son, he asks, "But, why?". I guess we are all asking that question in our hearts as we struggle to come to grips with what happened.
Finally, I'd like to express my personal sympathies to the families of German people who are grieving for their loved ones. We Americans need to remember that this did not only happen to us just because it geographically happened in our country -- German people (as well as other nations) have lost family members, friends and colleagues. Many are probably still waiting for news. Our thoughts are with you all.
Again, many, many thanks to the German people who stand with us and have shown it so inspiringly
